How to Safely Pack Electronics for a Move

Photograph and Label Everything
Before unplugging a single device, take photos of all cable setups from multiple angles. Label both ends of every cable with masking tape or coloured stickers. This simple step eliminates the guesswork when reconnecting at your new Montreal home. Remove batteries from remotes and wireless devices to prevent corrosion during transit.
Use Original Packaging When Possible
Manufacturer boxes are engineered to protect your electronics. If you kept them, now's the time to dig them out. For TVs without original boxes, sandwich the screen between two flat pieces of cardboard, wrap in a moving blanket, and secure with tape. Never lay a flat-screen face-down. For laptops, wrap them in anti-static bubble wrap and place in a padded laptop bag or box.
Montreal's temperature extremes matter too — in winter, let electronics acclimatize to room temperature for at least an hour before plugging them in to avoid condensation damage.
Transporting Electronics Safely
Pack all electronics snugly so nothing shifts. TVs should stand upright in the truck, secured between mattresses or against padded walls. Small items like routers, external drives, and tablets are best transported in your personal vehicle. If you're moving during a Montreal heat wave or cold snap, keep sensitive devices in climate-controlled spaces as long as possible.
