Packing a Home Office: Computers, Files & Desks

Back Up and Disconnect

Before touching a single cable, back up all your data to an external drive or cloud service. Take a photo of your desk setup and every cable connection behind your monitor and desktop. Label each cable with masking tape and bundle them in zip-lock bags. This saves hours of frustration when reassembling at your new Montreal apartment.

Pack Computers and Monitors

Use original packaging if you have it — manufacturers design those boxes to absorb shock. Without it, wrap monitors in anti-static bubble wrap and place them in a snug box with foam corners. Desktop towers should be packed upright, never on their side. Keep hard drives and SSDs with you during the move rather than on the truck, especially during Montreal winters when extreme cold can affect electronics.

Files, Desk, and Peripherals

Transfer important paper files to a portable file box with a lid. Shred anything you no longer need — Staples locations across Montreal offer shredding services. Disassemble your desk and label each piece, bagging screws and bolts together. Keyboards, mice, and webcams go in a single accessories box padded with packing paper.
