How to Pack Artwork and Mirrors for Moving

Tape and Wrap Glass Surfaces
For any piece with glass, apply painter's tape in an X pattern across the surface. This won't prevent breakage, but it holds shards in place if the glass does crack — protecting everything else on the truck. Then wrap the entire piece in glassine paper or packing paper, followed by bubble wrap. Avoid wrapping bubble wrap directly against oil paintings or textured canvas.
Use Mirror and Picture Boxes
Telescoping mirror boxes adjust to fit different sizes and provide the rigid protection that soft wrapping alone cannot. Slide your wrapped piece inside, fill gaps with crumpled paper, and seal the box. Write "FRAGILE — GLASS" and "THIS SIDE UP" on the outside. If you're moving multiple pieces, separate each one with cardboard sheets inside the same box.
Loading Art in the Truck
Art and mirrors should always stand upright in the truck, never flat. Place them between mattresses or in a dedicated slot near the truck wall, secured with straps. Montreal's streets — especially in neighbourhoods like the Plateau and Vieux-Montréal — can be rough on cargo, so extra padding prevents vibration damage. For high-value pieces, consider specialty art movers or additional insurance.
