How to Pack Lamps and Lampshades for Moving

Disassemble Lamps First

Remove the lampshade, unscrew the bulb, and detach the harp (the metal frame that holds the shade). Wrap the bulb in paper and pack it in a small box with other bulbs. Tape the harp to the lamp base or place it in the same box. Coil the cord and secure it with a twist tie or rubber band so it doesn't snag during the move.

Protect Lampshades Properly

Lampshades are deceptively fragile — they dent, crush, and stain easily. Never wrap a lampshade in newspaper (the ink transfers). Instead, wrap it loosely in clean packing paper or a white pillowcase. Each shade should go in its own box, ideally one just slightly larger than the shade itself. Nest smaller shades inside larger ones only if you place paper between them. Do not put anything on top of a lampshade box.

Pack Lamp Bases Securely

Wrap ceramic and glass lamp bases in bubble wrap and pack them snugly in a box with padding on all sides. For tall floor lamps, wrap the entire pole in a moving blanket and secure with tape. Mark boxes "FRAGILE" and "THIS SIDE UP." Montreal movers navigating spiral staircases in buildings across Mile End and Outremont will appreciate clear labelling on delicate items.
