Moving Smart Home Devices: Nest, Ring & Home Automation

Taking Stock of Your Smart Home Ecosystem

The average Montreal smart home now contains 10-25 connected devices, and that number keeps growing. Before you start disconnecting anything, create a complete inventory: smart thermostats (Nest, Ecobee), video doorbells (Ring, Nest Hello), smart locks (August, Schlage Encode), smart speakers (Google Home, Amazon Echo), smart lighting (Philips Hue, LIFX), security cameras (Arlo, Wyze), smart plugs, sensors, and your hub or router setup. Note which devices are battery-powered (easy to remove) vs. hardwired (may need an electrician).

The key question for each device: should you take it or leave it? Smart thermostats, video doorbells, and smart locks are often expected by buyers as part of the home — removing them can create friction during the sale. On the other hand, they're your property unless the purchase agreement says otherwise. Discuss with your real estate agent before stripping the house of smart devices.

Removing and Packing Smart Home Devices

Smart Thermostats (Nest, Ecobee): In the app, go to Settings and remove the device from your account (critical — otherwise the new owner can't set it up). Turn off the HVAC breaker. Pull the thermostat off the wall plate, then unscrew the wall plate. Replace with the original "dumb" thermostat if you kept it, or install a basic thermostat ($25-$50) so the new owners have heat. In Montreal, leaving a home without a functioning thermostat in winter is a serious liability.

Video Doorbells (Ring, Nest): Remove from your account in the app. For battery models, press the release button and pull off the mount. For hardwired models, turn off the breaker, disconnect the two low-voltage wires, and cap them with wire nuts. Reconnect the original doorbell if available. Pack the doorbell with its mounting hardware, charging cable, and spare faceplates.

Smart Locks: Reset the lock to factory settings (this removes all codes and account links). Remove the interior and exterior assemblies. Reinstall the original deadbolt and keys — never leave a home without a functioning lock. Pack the smart lock with its batteries, mounting hardware, and any strike plates.

Network and Hub Migration

If you use a smart home hub (SmartThings, Hubitat, Home Assistant), back up your configuration before disconnecting. Home Assistant users should create a full snapshot. SmartThings users should note that cloud-based configurations will restore automatically when the hub reconnects, but local automations may need reconfiguration.

At the new home, set up your WiFi network first — ideally with the same network name (SSID) and password as your old network. This allows most smart devices to reconnect automatically without individual reconfiguration. If you're changing ISPs or using a new router, you'll need to reconnect every WiFi device individually — budget 2-4 hours for a 15-device home.

Reconfiguring at the New Location

Install devices in this order: router/hub first, then thermostats and critical devices, then convenience devices (lights, plugs, speakers). Thermostats at the new home may need different wiring — Nest and Ecobee have compatibility checkers on their websites that let you photograph your new home's thermostat wiring to confirm compatibility before installation.

Update all device locations in your apps — this affects weather-based automations, geofencing triggers, and emergency service dispatch for security systems. Ring and Nest security devices are linked to your address for police/fire dispatch; failing to update this can send emergency services to your old address. Finally, test every device and automation rule in the new environment. WiFi signal strength, wall materials, and device distance from the router can all affect performance — you may need to add a mesh WiFi node or relocate your hub for optimal coverage.
