Can You Move a Shed or Gazebo? Here's How

Is Your Shed or Gazebo Worth Moving?

The first question isn't how to move a shed — it's whether you should. A basic 8x10 resin or metal shed costs $500-$1,500 new. Moving that same shed — disassembly, transport, site preparation, and reassembly — can cost $500-$1,200. For inexpensive prefabricated sheds, buying new often makes more financial sense. However, custom-built cedar sheds ($3,000-$10,000+), heritage structures, or gazebos with electrical and plumbing are almost always worth relocating.

Assess the shed's condition: check the floor for rot, test the structural integrity of walls and roof framing, and inspect hardware for corrosion. Sheds over 15 years old with wooden floors often have foundation rot that makes disassembly dangerous and reassembly unreliable. A 30-minute inspection before committing to the move can save you thousands.

Moving a Shed Whole (Small Structures)

Sheds under 8x10 feet and under 1,500 lbs can sometimes be moved in one piece. The process involves lifting the shed with a forklift or hydraulic jacks, sliding steel beams underneath, and loading it onto a flatbed trailer. At the new location, the shed is craned or rolled off the trailer onto a prepared foundation (gravel pad, concrete blocks, or poured slab).

Moving a shed whole requires: clear path access for a flatbed truck (at least 12 feet of gate/path width), a crane or forklift at both locations, and no overhead obstructions (power lines, tree branches). In Montreal, you may also need a transport permit from the borough if the shed exceeds standard road dimensions — typically anything wider than 8.5 feet. Cost for whole-shed moves: $300-$800 local.

Disassembling Larger Sheds and Gazebos

For sheds over 10x12 feet, disassembly is usually the only practical option. Remove contents first, then work from the top down: shingles and roofing paper, roof sheathing, rafters, wall panels or individual boards, and finally the floor frame. Gazebos follow a similar sequence: remove the roof cap, rafters, screens or curtains, posts, and base frame.

If the shed has electrical wiring, have a licensed electrician disconnect and cap all circuits before disassembly ($100-$200). Plumbed sheds (some have garden sinks or hose connections) need plumber attention. Label every component with numbered tags and photograph the assembly from multiple angles. For complex structures, drawing a simple diagram showing which boards connect where saves hours during reassembly.

Shed and Gazebo Moving Costs

Small resin/metal shed (whole move): $300-$800. Wooden shed 8x10 (disassemble/reassemble): $500-$1,200. Large wooden shed 10x16+: $1,000-$2,000+. Gazebo (wood, 10-12 ft diameter): $800-$1,500. Gazebo with electrical: $1,200-$2,500. Site preparation at the new location (gravel pad, leveling) adds $200-$500. These prices include labor, transport, and basic reinstallation.

At the new location, check your borough's regulations on shed placement. Most Montreal boroughs require sheds to be set back 1-2 meters from property lines, and sheds over 15 m² (161 sq ft) may require a building permit ($50-$200). Gazebos sometimes fall under different regulations than sheds — check with your borough's urban planning department before installation. Up & Out can handle the full process from disassembly to permit coordination to reinstallation.
