Moving Gym Equipment: Treadmills, Weights & Pelotons

Common Home Gym Equipment and Weights

The home gym trend that exploded during 2020 shows no signs of slowing down, and Montreal's basements and spare bedrooms are packed with serious fitness equipment. A typical home gym might include a treadmill (250-350 lbs), an elliptical (150-250 lbs), a Peloton bike (135 lbs) or Peloton Tread (290 lbs), a power rack (200-400 lbs), and free weights that easily add up to 500+ lbs. Moving all of this requires planning.

The biggest challenge isn't just the weight — it's the awkward shapes and electronic components. A commercial-grade treadmill has a motor, an incline mechanism, and a fragile console display. A power rack needs to be disassembled bolt by bolt. And a full set of dumbbells from 5 to 75 lbs totals roughly 800 lbs of compact, rolling metal.

Moving Treadmills and Ellipticals

Treadmills are the most common — and most challenging — piece of gym equipment to move. Most models can be folded to reduce their footprint, but they remain heavy and top-heavy in folded position. Before moving, unplug the machine 30 minutes early to let the motor cool, remove the safety key, and secure the folding mechanism with the provided pin or a ratchet strap.

For stairs, we use an appliance dolly with a stair-climbing attachment. The treadmill is strapped upright to the dolly and moved one step at a time. In Montreal's walk-ups, measuring the stairway width is critical — if the treadmill won't fit around the turn, partial disassembly (removing the handrails and console) may be necessary. We carry the necessary Allen keys and socket sets for all major brands.

Ellipticals present their own challenges due to protruding pedals and moving parts. We remove the pedals, stabilizer bars, and console before wrapping and transporting. Reassembly at the destination takes 20-40 minutes per unit.

Moving Peloton Bikes and Smart Fitness Equipment

Peloton bikes (original and Bike+) weigh about 135 lbs and 140 lbs respectively. While not extremely heavy, the touchscreen display ($500+ to replace) is vulnerable to impact. We wrap the screen in a microfiber cloth, then bubble wrap, and finally a moving blanket. The bike stays assembled and is moved on a furniture dolly.

The Peloton Tread (290 lbs) and Tread+ (455 lbs, though recalled) are significantly heavier and require 2-3 movers. The belt and screen are protected, and the unit is strapped to a heavy-duty appliance dolly for stairs. Other smart equipment like Mirror (70 lbs), Tempo (100 lbs), and Tonal (wall-mounted, 150 lbs) each have specific moving protocols. Tonal requires professional removal and reinstallation ($200-$350).

Moving Free Weights, Power Racks & Rubber Flooring

Free weights should be packed in small, sturdy boxes — never large boxes, as 50 lbs of dumbbells in a large box creates a box that shifts and tears. We use reinforced banker boxes and limit each to 40-50 lbs. Weight plates are stacked in groups of 4-6 and strapped together.

Power racks, squat cages, and Smith machines must be fully disassembled. Label every bolt and pin, photograph the assembly sequence, and bag hardware by section. A typical power rack disassembly takes 45-90 minutes. Rubber gym flooring tiles can be stacked and transported flat — number the tiles for correct reinstallation pattern at the new location.
