Moving Near UQAM: Latin Quarter Student Guide

Living in the Latin Quarter Near UQAM

UQAM's main campus is centered around the Berri-UQAM metro station, right in Montreal's Quartier latin. This is the city's cultural and intellectual heart — bookstores on Saint-Denis, the Grande Bibliothèque next door, and theatre venues within walking distance. For students who thrive on urban energy, there's no better location.

Rent in the immediate Latin Quarter area ranges from $900–$1,400 for a 3½. The housing stock is a mix of older apartment buildings, renovated lofts (especially along Sainte-Catherine East), and classic Montreal walk-ups on streets like Saint-Hubert and Saint-André. The area is well-served by three metro lines converging at Berri-UQAM, making commuting a breeze if you live elsewhere.

Affordable Neighborhoods for UQAM Students

If the Latin Quarter's rent feels steep, look just north. The lower Plateau along Ontario Street and de Maisonneuve offers similar urban energy at slightly lower prices. Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie, accessible by the orange line (Beaubien or Rosemont stations), offers excellent value with 3½ apartments often running $800–$1,100.

The Village (east along Sainte-Catherine from Berri) is another popular student choice. Known for its LGBTQ+ community and vibrant nightlife, the Village has some of the most affordable rent near any Montreal campus. Studios and 3½ apartments on streets like Wolfe, Amherst, and Papineau can be found for $750–$1,100.

Centre-Sud, just south of UQAM, is a rapidly evolving area. It offers lower rent and is walkable to campus, though the neighborhood is still in transition with ongoing condo development projects.

Transit and Commuting to UQAM

Berri-UQAM is the largest metro interchange in the system, connecting the green, orange, and yellow lines. This means you can live practically anywhere on the metro network and reach campus within 20–30 minutes. Students on a tighter budget often live in areas like Verdun, Villeray, or even Longueuil (via the yellow line) and commute easily.

Bixi bike-share stations are plentiful around campus, making cycling a great warm-weather option from the Plateau or Mile End. The Réseau express vélo (REV) on Saint-Denis takes you straight into the heart of UQAM territory.

Move-Day Tips for UQAM's Neighborhood

The streets around UQAM are busy with traffic, pedestrians, and delivery trucks. Saint-Denis and Sainte-Catherine are particularly chaotic on move days. Book a city parking permit and try to schedule your move for early morning — ideally before 7 a.m. on a weekday to beat the rush.

Many buildings in the area have narrow entrance halls. Disassemble larger furniture before the move. If you're in a high-rise on de Maisonneuve or René-Lévesque, coordinate with building management for elevator access — some buildings require 48 hours' notice.
