Moving Marble & Stone Items: Tables, Counters & Statues

Why Marble and Stone Are So Challenging to Move
Natural stone — marble, granite, slate, limestone, and soapstone — combines extreme weight with surprising fragility. Marble is particularly vulnerable: it's softer than granite (3-5 on the Mohs hardness scale vs. 6-7 for granite), prone to chipping at edges and corners, and can crack from flex or point impact. A 1-inch thick marble table top weighing 150 lbs can crack clean through if supported unevenly during transport.
Common stone items in Montreal homes include marble dining tables (100-300 lbs for the top alone), granite kitchen islands being relocated, marble-top antique furniture (Victorian dressers, washstands), stone garden statues (50-2,000+ lbs), marble fireplace surrounds, and decorative stone columns. Each requires different handling based on weight, size, and vulnerability.
Edge Protection and Wrapping Techniques
The edges and corners of marble are where 90% of damage occurs. We use a three-layer protection system: first, foam corner protectors on all edges (cut from 2-inch closed-cell foam), then a layer of bubble wrap over the entire surface, and finally a moving blanket secured with stretch wrap. For polished marble, a layer of acid-free tissue paper goes between the stone and the bubble wrap to prevent the bubble texture from imprinting on the surface.
Marble table tops should always be separated from their bases before moving. Most marble tops sit on a base with nothing more than gravity and silicone pads — simply lift straight up with 2-4 people (depending on weight) and set on a padded surface. Some antique pieces have tops adhered with plaster or wax; these require careful separation using a thin putty knife to avoid cracking the stone.
For transport, marble and stone should travel vertically (on edge) whenever possible, like a painting. This distributes the stress evenly and prevents the weight from concentrating on one support point, which causes cracks. We build custom A-frame supports for large marble tops, holding the stone upright with padded clamps and ratchet straps.
Moving Heavy Stone Statues and Garden Pieces
Garden statues and stone sculptures range from 50-lb decorative pieces to 2,000-lb architectural elements. For lightweight pieces (under 200 lbs), hand-carrying with proper lifting technique is sufficient. For mid-range pieces (200-500 lbs), we use a furniture dolly with a custom plywood platform and strap the piece upright. For heavy statues (500+ lbs), a pallet jack, engine hoist, or crane lift may be required.

Before moving outdoor stone pieces, clean them thoroughly to remove soil, moss, and organic growth. Wet stone is heavier and slippery. Let pieces dry for 24-48 hours before the move. In Montreal's freeze-thaw climate, check for existing cracks — water that has seeped into micro-fractures and frozen repeatedly can cause hidden structural weaknesses that may fail during the stress of moving.
Marble and Stone Moving Costs in Montreal
Small marble items (under 100 lbs, table tops): $100-$250 for specialty wrapping and transport. Medium items (100-300 lbs, large tables, fireplace surrounds): $250-$500. Large items (300-1,000 lbs, kitchen islands, large statues): $500-$1,200. Extra-large items (1,000+ lbs, architectural stone, monument-grade pieces): $1,200-$3,000+. Custom crating adds $150-$500 per item.
Stone damage during moving is often irreparable. A chipped marble edge can be polished down, but a crack through the slab cannot be invisibly repaired. Replacement costs for marble table tops run $500-$3,000+ depending on size and stone type. Investment in professional stone handling — $100-$500 more than general movers would charge — is always worth the protection it provides for these irreplaceable materials.
