Moving a Murphy Bed or Wall Bed: What to Know

Murphy Bed Types and Mechanisms

Murphy beds (also called wall beds) are popular space-saving solutions in Montreal's smaller condos and apartments, particularly in neighborhoods like Griffintown, the Plateau, and Ville-Marie. They come in two main mechanism types: spring-loaded (older models, 200-350 lbs total) and piston/gas-cylinder (modern models, 250-500 lbs). The mechanism type determines the disassembly approach and safety considerations during the move.

Spring-loaded Murphy beds store significant tension in the springs — releasing this tension improperly can cause the spring to snap back violently, causing serious injury. Gas-piston models are safer to handle but the cylinders must be protected from puncture during transport. Both types are wall-mounted with heavy-duty lag bolts into studs, and the wall anchoring system must be properly detached before moving.

Disassembling a Murphy Bed for the Move

Start by removing the mattress. Murphy bed mattresses are typically thinner than standard mattresses (6-10 inches vs. 10-14 inches) and have retention straps — unbuckle these first. Next, fold the bed into the closed (wall) position and secure it with the locking mechanism. This is the safest position for disassembly.

Remove the cabinet surround first — side panels, top bridge, and shelving units. These are usually connected with cam locks or bolts and come apart in sections. Then address the main frame: detach the frame from the wall anchors (typically 6-8 lag bolts into studs). For spring models, the springs should be detensioned by a professional — this involves carefully unwinding or disconnecting the spring mechanism while the bed is in the locked position.

The frame itself typically breaks down into the wall-mount plate, two side rails, the bed platform, and the mechanism hardware. Label every component and bag all hardware by section. Photograph the wall anchor positions at your old home — you'll need to find studs in the same configuration at the new location.

Transporting Murphy Bed Components

The bed platform is the largest single piece (typically 60" x 80" for a queen) and should be wrapped in moving blankets and transported flat. Side rails and the wall-mount plate are wrapped individually. The spring or piston mechanisms are the most delicate components — wrap in bubble wrap and transport in a padded box. Never compress gas pistons beyond their normal range or expose them to temperatures above 50°C.

The cabinet surround travels like standard furniture — blanket-wrapped, upright, and strapped in the truck. If your Murphy bed includes built-in lighting or USB outlets, disconnect all wiring and cap the exposed ends with wire nuts.

Reinstalling at the New Location

Reinstallation takes 3-5 hours for an experienced team. The critical step is finding studs that match the anchor pattern — Murphy beds must be anchored into studs, not just drywall. If the new wall's stud spacing differs from the original installation, an additional mounting board may be needed ($50-$100 in lumber and hardware).

After mounting, the mechanism must be retensioned and calibrated. Springs need to be wound to the correct tension so the bed lifts smoothly and holds in the closed position without drifting. Gas pistons should be tested through 10-15 cycles to ensure consistent operation. If your Murphy bed is from a major brand (Resource Furniture, Lori Wall Beds, IKEA), their customer support can provide torque specs and calibration instructions. Professional Murphy bed installation/removal typically costs $300-$600 including both ends of the move.
