Finding a Family Doctor After Moving to Montreal

Registering on the GAMF Waitlist

Finding a family doctor in Montreal is one of the biggest post-move challenges. The Guichet d'accès à un médecin de famille (GAMF) is Quebec's centralized waitlist system. You can register online through the RAMQ website or by calling 811. Once registered, wait times vary — anywhere from a few months to over a year depending on your area and health profile. Priority is given to patients with chronic conditions, pregnant women, and children under 5.

When you register, you'll be asked for your RAMQ health card number and your new Montreal address. Make sure your health card reflects your updated address, as this determines which CLSC territory you're assigned to and which doctors may take you on.

Walk-In Clinics and Alternatives While You Wait

While waiting for a family doctor, walk-in clinics (cliniques sans rendez-vous) are your primary care option. Use the Bonjour-santé app or website to book same-day or next-day appointments at clinics across Montreal. Popular clinic networks include Medisys, Lacroix, and the CLSC system. Your local CLSC can also provide vaccinations, blood work, and basic health services at no cost with a valid RAMQ card.

For non-urgent issues, consider telehealth through Maple or Dialogue — virtual consultations are often available within hours. These services aren't covered by RAMQ but typically cost $50–$100 per visit and can handle prescriptions, referrals, and routine health questions.

Updating Your RAMQ Health Card After Moving

Update your RAMQ health card address within 30 days of moving. You can do this online at ramq.gouv.qc.ca or by visiting a RAMQ office — the main Montreal office is at 425 boulevard de Maisonneuve Ouest. If you're moving from another Canadian province, apply for a Quebec health card as soon as possible. Coverage from your previous province typically expires 3 months after you establish residency in Quebec.

Keep your previous province's card active until your RAMQ card arrives. If you're new to Canada, bring your work permit or permanent residency documents — there's a 3-month waiting period before RAMQ coverage kicks in, so arrange private insurance to bridge the gap.
