Neighborhoods Around the UdeM Campus
Université de Montréal's main campus sprawls across the northern slope of Mount Royal, accessible via the Université-de-Montréal metro station on the blue line. Polytechnique and HEC Montréal share this hilltop location, making the surrounding neighborhoods — Côte-des-Neiges, Outremont, and parts of Mile End — prime territory for students.
Côte-des-Neiges (CDN) is the most popular choice. It's the city's most culturally diverse neighborhood, with affordable rent and an incredible selection of international restaurants and grocery stores. A 3½ on Côte-des-Neiges Road, Édouard-Montpetit, or Gatineau runs $850–$1,300 — well below downtown rates for comparable space.
Outremont, on the eastern side of the campus, offers a quieter, more upscale atmosphere. Rent is higher (expect $1,100–$1,600 for a 3½), but the tree-lined avenues, bakeries on Laurier, and easy access to the campus via the pedestrian tunnel make it worthwhile for those who can afford it.
Why Côte-des-Neiges Is a Student Favorite
CDN's appeal is simple: affordable rent, proximity to campus, and everything you need within walking distance. Chemin de la Côte-des-Neiges is a main artery lined with banks, pharmacies, dollar stores, and restaurants serving cuisine from around the world. The Côte-des-Neiges metro station connects you to the orange line for quick trips downtown.
The housing stock varies from mid-rise apartment towers (many built in the 1960s–70s) to classic Montreal triplexes on quieter streets like Légaré, Lavoie, and Linton. Tower apartments often come with heating included, which is a significant budget advantage during Montreal's harsh winters.
One note of caution: some CDN buildings have had issues with pests. Ask current tenants about building conditions and check the Régie du logement database for complaints before signing a lease.
Getting to Campus from Nearby Neighborhoods
The blue line metro is your best friend. Université-de-Montréal station has a direct entrance to the campus, and Édouard-Montpetit station (one stop east) connects to the main pavilions via an underground corridor. From CDN, you can also take the 51 or 165 bus directly up the hill.

If you live in Mile End or the Plateau, the 97 bus on avenue du Mont-Royal is a scenic but slower option. Some students bike up through the mountain trails — definitely a workout, but free and fast on the way down.
Moving Tips for the UdeM Area
CDN's main streets are busy and parking is competitive. For move-in day, get your city parking permit early and plan to arrive before 8 a.m. to claim your spot. Many CDN apartment towers have service elevators — book yours in advance through the superintendent.
