Hochelaga-Maisonneuve: Montreal's Up-and-Coming Neighborhood

A Neighborhood in Transition

Hochelaga-Maisonneuve — or "HoMa" as locals call it — has shifted from a working-class stronghold to one of Montreal's most dynamic neighborhoods. Ontario Street East is now dotted with specialty coffee shops, microbreweries, and vintage stores. The area around the Olympic Stadium and Botanical Garden gives it a unique cultural anchor that few neighborhoods can match.

Despite the changes, HoMa retains an authentic, gritty character that many residents value. It's a neighborhood where longtime families coexist with artists and young professionals drawn by the low cost of living.

Rent & Local Amenities

HoMa offers some of the lowest rents on the island. A 3½ typically runs $800–$1,200, and a 4½ can be found for $1,000–$1,400. The Maisonneuve Market on Ontario Street is a neighborhood staple, and Parc Maisonneuve — adjacent to the Olympic Park — provides 63 hectares of green space for jogging, cycling, and cross-country skiing.

The green metro line serves the area well, with stations at Pie-IX, Viau, and Assomption. The Pie-IX BRT (bus rapid transit) corridor also connects HoMa to the north shore quickly.

Moving Considerations

HoMa's grid-style streets and low-rise buildings make moving logistics relatively simple. Most apartments are in 2–3 storey walk-ups with wider staircases than those found on the Plateau. Parking is less competitive, and securing a no-parking permit from the Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough is straightforward.
