I heard Tom Petty’s You Don’t Know How it Feels the other day, and thought for a moment it could have been a running song. Afterall, the opening line is “Let me run with you tonight.” Later, Sue was walking me through an exercise using a lacrosse ball to help mobilize and loosen my shoulder, and I thought “Hmmm…maybe it really is a running song.” The line in the chorus “Let’s roll another joint” popped into my head. Okay, so maybe Tom wasn’t exactly thinking about shoulders when he penned the words.
Regardless of where Tom was going with the song, I love the use of the lacrosse ball and wall (and/or floor) to loosen up my shoulder. This past summer, when I was swimming in beautiful Lake Couchiching several times per week, I managed to do some damage to my right shoulder. I noticed that it had a negative impact on my running (and sleeping!), but regular use of a lacrosse ball makes a big difference in range of motion and pain management.
In this brief video, Sue is showing how to combine the passive rolling out across the deltoid muscle with a gentle extension movement to enhance shoulder mobility. Increasing the range of motion of the shoulder can help improve efficiency, performance and safety on the trails.
Thanks, Sue for another great tip!
